Energy drinks with different caffeine levels: Bucked Up, Celsius Essentials, Ghost and BUM

How Much Caffeine Is in Your Energy Drink? A Simple Guide to Daily Limits

Energy drinks range from 80mg to 300mg of caffeine per can, so "one energy drink" can mean very different things. Here's how to think about your daily total.

The 400mg guideline

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, up to 400mg of caffeine a day is generally not associated with dangerous, negative effects for most healthy adults. People vary a lot in how they handle caffeine, and some health conditions and medications change that, so treat 400mg as a ceiling, not a target. Pregnant or nursing women and anyone with a heart condition should check with their doctor.

What 400mg looks like in cans

Drink Caffeine per can Cans to reach 400mg
Bucked Up (16 oz) 300mg About 1⅓
Celsius Essentials (16 oz) 270mg About 1½
Ghost, C4, Alani Nu, Celsius 200mg 2
Monster Original (16 oz) About 160mg 2½
BUM (12 oz) 112mg About 3½
Red Bull (8.4 oz) 80mg 5

Remember that coffee, tea, soda and pre-workout all count toward the same total.

Tips for drinking energy drinks smarter

BUM Energy Cream Soda 12-pack, a lower-caffeine option

  • Match the can to the moment. Save 300mg cans for hard training days and reach for something like BUM's 112mg for an afternoon pick-me-up.
  • Watch the clock. Caffeine can stick around for hours, so a late can may cut into your sleep.
  • Follow the label. Some brands set their own limit. Bucked Up, for example, advises no more than two cans in 24 hours.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink water alongside energy drinks, especially when you're working out.

Caffeine and ingredient amounts are from each brand's current labels at the time of writing. Brands do reformulate, so always check the can. Energy drinks aren't recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women, or anyone sensitive to caffeine.
